We stayed four nights at Cluaran house over New Year's Eve, arriving a few days beforehand. With our child, we chose the larger room. It was very spacious, perhaps more than we needed, but after two weeks travelling around Europe I appreciated the room to spread out. The bathroom was smaller and had a shower only, no bath. The room and beds were comfortable and clean, though things creaked and some parts of the room, bathroom and house looked like they needed repair or updating. The house is dated, but given it's almost 200 years old, that felt fitting. Abraham served us hot breakfast each morning, took our orders, and we got to know him. He even arranged a taxi for our departure and looked after our needs throughout. That level of service was outstanding, and I'd stay here again and again. The location felt safe and pleasant. Central Edinburgh sights like the museum, East Princes Gardens and Edinburgh Castle are about 15-30 minutes away on foot. Bus 27 stops a few streets down and gets you around very quickly; I'd suggest a day pass and hopping on when needed. I felt safe walking, though I've never felt unsafe in Scotland. Abraham mentioned in passing that the house would close temporarily for some refurbishing, so some of the dated parts may get fixed. I can't recommend it enough.

The hosts were really nice and cordial. Since we had an early tour, they brought us toast and butter in the morning. Breakfast was simple, with fresh eggs made to order and a choice offered. Cluaran house is a beautiful, cosy little guest house close to the city centre, and the rooms are quite spacious. Ours faced the main road and had three beds. The bathroom was a little small but comfortable.

The room was huge, with an ensuite, and the house has loads of character and period details. Breakfast was excellent and WiFi was free. It was a little chilly in the room, and street parking is only free after 5pm. Even so, I’d definitely recommend staying here.

I felt more like a guest in someone’s home than a customer at Cluaran, and I’ll be back soon since I have family nearby. Ibrahim even arranged a taxi for me and other departing guests on my last morning. His mother invited me in for falafel, tea, and a chat one afternoon, and the housekeepers left Scottish treats on the vanity each day. I still think about the Tunnock's tea cakes and Walker's cookies. Ibrahim and the staff were lovely throughout. My room was a small but comfortable single above the front door, so I woke to birdsong. The private bathroom was down the hall, maybe 15 feet away, with a lovely shower and tub and a shelf for my overnight things. The location was perfect, and the price was very reasonable. Breakfast ran from 7:30 to 8:30, but it was fine if someone arrived near the end or a few minutes late. It was delicious and filling enough that I saved a lot on food because I didn’t need lunch after a full Scottish breakfast. On Orthodox Greek Easter, Ibrahim prepared a lovely cold breakfast and passed around colored eggs. Such a homey touch.

I had great conversations with the owner, Abrahin, during my stay at Cluaran House. The bathroom was always clean, and the rooms were fairly large by European standards. It was a wonderful three days in Edinburgh, made even better by the comfortable accommodation and easy access to Old Town. I’d highly recommend it.
