Hermitage Guest House

We had a very enjoyable short stay and wished we could have stayed longer. The room was lovely, the beds comfortable, and the staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast was nicely cooked, and they even had gluten-free bread for one of us, which isn't always available. Thanks for thinking of that. Our quiet room looked out towards the park (links), with pubs, restaurants, and places to visit all within walking distance. Special thanks to Tina (Zhang), who kindly mailed my jacket to my home after I absent-mindedly left it in the wardrobe. I really appreciate it, Tina, you're a star ⭐️. We'd definitely come back.

The city was wonderful, and the rest of our holiday went really well, but we were disappointed by this guest house and won't return. It had been hard to find a place when I booked, and this one looked decent enough, but that impression didn't last. The owners spoke hardly any English, so they couldn't really help with directions. Our room was cramped and dated, and although it wasn't dirty, it felt grubby. The en-suite was literally squeezed into a cupboard, with a shower badly affected by mildew. Getting in and out was a constant toe-bumping challenge. Breakfast was okay and there was plenty on the plate, though some of it wasn't appetising. The tea was cold, and the man serving it could have been cleaner.

Fine for a couple of nights. It was clean but short on space, and the corridors smelled a bit at times, though thankfully our room didn't. Breakfast was okay. You get what you pay for.

They overbooked us and put us up in another building. The replacement room was tiny and poorly furnished. Simply put, this isn't where they make you sleep.
