Ash has always been extremely accommodating, and the service is even better than the great rooms. I’d recommend this place to anyone visiting Edinburgh. I usually head out to explore town before breakfast, but the dining area always looked attractive.

Parking is a bit tight, though it’s easy to find. You won’t need the car much anyway, since the guesthouse is an easy walk from Edinburgh. There are plenty of shopping opportunities on the way into the city centre. A very nice, clean place.

Free parking is a plus, but we could hear other guests very clearly. We were on the ground floor, beside a room where people were speaking Indian or a similar language with a baby. They were so loud we could hear what they were saying, if we’d understood the language. I paid about what I would have for a hotel, so I was a bit disappointed with the stay.

The room itself wasn’t bad, but the manager wouldn’t turn on the heating, even in winter, saying “it costs too much.” It was autumn and getting cold, and with no double glazing the room was as cold as outside. I complained that there was no heat in the evenings or overnight and was basically forced to move out. The place was full of junkies making noise all night. The manager kept coming by with new ideas and rules, and it felt like 24-hour surveillance while I was left freezing. The price wasn’t worth the hassle at all. Avoid it. Any Travelodge is better, since at least you’ll have heating and won’t have someone spying on you day and night.
