For my first hostel stay, Princess Street Hostel in Edinburgh was a lovely surprise, even though I've travelled a lot. It's spotless, cleaner than plenty of five-star hotels I've stayed in. The bathrooms and showers are modern and sparkling, the kitchen is fantastic, and the large shared areas feel welcoming. You can tell the host cares about the place and has thought through the details. The smiling, helpful staff create a warm atmosphere where you feel at home. Guests are a mix of ages, and as a traveller over 50, I felt comfortable, safe and happy there. There are quite a few stairs up to reception, but the unexpected sea view from my room made them worthwhile. Being up higher also meant I couldn't hear Edinburgh's nightlife. A fantastic stay, easily five stars.

I booked a dorm bed at the last minute and hadn't noticed it was women only. The kind, very helpful woman at reception moved me to another dorm and gave me everything I needed. I also got a voucher for a nearby cafe, which was excellent. I'll definitely come back if I'm in Edinburgh again.

The receptionist's attitude was extremely poor. I was lectured for ten minutes because I hadn't replied to their messages quickly enough. They kept rolling their eyes as they spoke and came across as very arrogant. They also made discriminatory comments, including, “In our country, the water is safe to drink directly.”

The staff are lovely, and their travel experience means they know the little things that make you feel at home. I stayed at the Baxter downstairs before and didn't like it. Here, the pillow and bed are really comfortable, there are lockers, and the communal kitchen has loads of room to cook. The showers are spacious too, so everything feels easy and stress free. There aren't curtains on the bunk beds, in case that matters to you. They do try to offer a bottom bunk if one is available, so you can make one for yourself if you like.

My friends and I, a large group, picked this hostel at random and had a fantastic time. The service was top-notch, the room was comfortable, and the toilet and kitchen were clean. The kitchen had lots of utensils for us to use, and the dining room was cosy. We checked out but wanted to explore more of edinburgh, so we left our bags here. The receptionist was sooo niceeee!
