Silk Mill

I lived at Silk Mill from September 2023 to August 2024, and it really did feel like home. I made good friends there, and when I spoke to my parents I’d say “I’m home,” not “I’m back at the apartment.” I’d give the year four stars. The shared spaces were roomy and well looked after. I spent lots of time in the study area writing essays, reading and working with friends. We also celebrated Spring Festival and Dragon Boat Festival at the coffee bar. Staff were welcoming, and they decorated the whole apartment thoughtfully for Spring Festival, which made it feel homely. They also helped with my rubbish when I needed assistance while away on a trip. My ground-floor studio had a large fridge, a washer-dryer that I really needed, and a dishwasher I used to store pots and pans. The bathroom was about twice the size of one in a typical apartment, and the mirrored wardrobe was impressively large. The room faced the sun, though, so in summer I had to keep the curtains shut and use a fan to cool down. It was nice to have air conditioning in the common areas as a place to escape the heat. The location was handy for shopping at Lidl and Sainsbury’s, with a pharmacy across the street and bus routes 1, 34 and 35 for the university and city centre. I also loved being close to the canal for walks. There were a few things that could be better. The garbage room was messy for a while, which concerned residents. Maintenance replies for repairs in the apartment and upkeep of the communal printer could be quicker. The advertised free breakfast was only energy bars and cookies for the first few weeks, so I wouldn’t use it as a selling point. The washer and dishwasher are enough of a draw on their own. Thanks for a year that felt like home.

Kieron is especially dedicated and kind, always around and ready to help. Having him here makes me feel safe and happy. I’m also very thankful to all the staff, who are friendly, helpful and do a great job managing the apartment. And a huge thank you for temporarily keeping my important things and transferring them for me last week. thank you🩷

The rooms are fantastic, and having your own washer-dryer is so handy. The staff are brilliant and always ready to help and support. I love the events and social life, and the decorations are always great.

Kieron was especially helpful when I had an issue with a chair. He sorted it out quickly and professionally, and the communication was clear throughout. The staff were all friendly and supportive, and the service felt thoughtful and focused on students. I had a great experience at Silk Mill and really appreciate the help. I'd recommend it to others.
