The Balmoral Hotel

The location is fantastic, probably the best in Edinburgh, especially if you’re visiting for the first time or only staying briefly. Our room was clean and tastefully decorated, and we had a pleasant stay overall. I was surprised by how small the bathroom was. Some service details could have been better: there was no toothbrush, drinking water was limited, and one exchange with a receptionist felt a bit unusual. The other staff were friendly, especially at breakfast, and the concierge was eager to help.

The Balmoral made our stay in Edinburgh such a good one, and we’d gladly return. Breakfast had everything I wanted, haggis included, which you never find in Chicago restaurants. One evening we ordered room service, and the dinner arrived quickly, was delicious and well prepared, and the staff member set up the table for us. She was friendly and easy to talk to. The staff in general were warm and outgoing, and chatting with them felt like talking to friends. Our room was bigger than expected, with a great view, but still had the cozy feel we liked. The bathroom was roomy too, with an almost life size picture of Sean Connery that made it extra cool.

My daughter treated me to a lovely birthday lunch and a spa day, including an hour-long full body massage. The staff were friendly, polite, professional and knowledgeable throughout. Thanks so much for the service, it was a lovely treat.

We only ate at the Grill and didn’t stay at three hotel, but the staff were amazing and the set lunch was great value, whether you choose two or three courses. You can see why it was one of the late Queen’s mother’s favourite places. If it’s quiet in the off season and a room is out of budget, ask whether you can walk in for the breakfast buffet. It’s a way to feel like royalty without spending a fortune.
