The reception team were genuinely lovely, very pleasant and helpful. The hotel itself was unbearably hot, though, with no air moving around and the AC switched off during what was apparently the hottest May week on record. The takeaway breakfast was basically sugar and hydrogenated fat in a box, plus the world's tiniest bottle of water.

I asked about having my room cleaned and the receptionist said, quite rudely, that it wasn't offered under their policy. When I asked to see the policy, she got angry and couldn't show it to me. I understand if room service isn't available, but that could've been explained politely. She also brought up that she'd checked me in early the day before, even though I was willing to pay for early check-in. That really didn't feel like customer service. The receptionist was a young Asian woman in her early twenties who wore a scarf around her neck. Management should check this and give staff better training, or rehire.

Rani and the whole team made our stay really comfortable. We were waiting for our new apartment to be ready and spent seven nights at Travelodge Egham with several boxes of kitchen things and other belongings. Our room was already packed, so the manager kindly let us leave some boxes in storage for a few days, safely. Mary, Kiki, Margie, and Maria were all so friendly. Staff would often ask if we wanted the room serviced, even though we hadn't asked for a top-up, and reception helped us get a quiet room. Really grateful for such a helpful team, and I'd happily recommend the place.

The room had some strange stains on the carpet and the shower barely had any pressure. Its layout was odd, and apart from the chair it didn't look much like the photos. The staff, though, were friendly and very helpful.

Room 218, on the top floor, gave us a pretty good vantage point. You could see through the gaps at the far right of the building and look around the raised edge wall outside the hotel, though that big white metal structure blocked part of the view. The room door had a map of floor 2, which helped make sense of the layout: there are levels 2, 1, 0 and -1. Most rooms are on 2, along with a narrow, long upper courtyard ringed by a few rooms that must have very limited views. Reception and some rooms are on 1; the main entrance and drinks machine are on 0. The underground car entrance is on -1, down a red-brick-sided ramp, which you can see in one of my photos. The 'choose your room' option costs £3.50 and is offered just after you book, if you want to pick a room with a better view ahead of time.
