Knights Hill Hotel & Spa

The breakfast buffet was the one bright spot. It was still hot, though a young waitress asked if I was finished while I was still eating. The location is handy for local attractions, and we had lunch at the wonderful Farmers next door. We'd booked a superior room as a birthday treat, but it felt very dated, with old chairs and a hairdryer that seemed ancient. There was a damp patch in the bedroom and the bathroom door was coming apart. Instead of toiletries, there was only pump hand wash and shower gel. My partner had asked for a fridge, and we were told the room was ready when we arrived, but we had to wait for it to be brought in. By then it was warm, so the things we needed to chill couldn't be kept cold. It's a shame, as this used to be a nice place. See Trip advisor for photos.

The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful, and my room was spacious and clean. It was far too warm at first, but turning off the radiators and opening the window sorted it out. Next time I'll ask them to do that before I arrive. I only stayed one night while visiting friends nearby, but the spa and pool were fantastic and I'd definitely come back. Getting there by public transport isn't very easy, though there are cabs at the station. I arrived from London after work at about 9, when the kitchen was already closed, so I can't comment on the evening food. I also skipped breakfast to make time for a swim. I'll have to try both on another visit.

The spa was okay, but it needs a thorough clean and quite a few repairs. All the black tape around the place looked unappealing. Dinner cost a lot for something ordinary, and the restaurant had no atmosphere, which made the meal feel even blander. The waitresses did their best. Breakfast was a little better, though the service suffered because staff seemed more interested in chatting together at the bar. The hotel feels well past its best, and the restaurant brings an old people's home to mind.

Our guests said booking accommodation was easy, and the staff were accommodating with their extra requests. We were amazed by how straightforward everything was and are really grateful to every staff member we met. We held our wedding here on 1st November. The day ran seamlessly, and the planning beforehand was fantastic. We made a few requests and they were all taken care of. Emails to Emma/Sophie got quick replies too.
