We booked a double room at the last minute when rain cut our camping trip short, and stayed for two nights. We’d read the property information first, so we knew what to expect. We’re both former students who lived in student accommodation, and what we found matched what was described online. It was quiet in summer, with grassy areas and benches around the flats, and we’d recommend it if you want a warm bed, a hot shower, some peace away from town noise and the option to cook for yourself. The staff were friendly and wonderfully accommodating. Check-in was easy: we got keys, a map and directions for the room and parking. We could drive up to the flat to unload, then leave the car in a secure campus car park nearby. It was a few hundred metres uphill, but that didn’t bother us given it’s a university campus. We were also reassured that reception was open 24 hours if anything came up. The flat had seven en suite rooms and a shared kitchen with a large table. There were pots, pans, mugs, cutlery, cooking appliances and space in the cupboards and fridge-freezer. Our room was spacious enough, with a basic double bed, bedding, towels and linen. There were plenty of sockets, a lovely hot shower with good pressure, a desk, shelves, a cupboard with a safe, hanging space, bedside tables and a full-length mirror. You could open the window on its latch or fully, and there were blackout blinds. The notice board had information about campus facilities and general safety. Free Wi-Fi worked for watching Netflix on the tablet we brought along in the evenings. There was a TV in the kitchen, but not in the rooms. The campus also had a well stocked shop with a gluten-free section, which was great for me as someone with Coeliac disease, plus a coffee shop serving Starbucks, a gym and a canteen. Buses to Falmouth and nearby towns ran frequently. If I’m being really picky, the bathroom light and fan were automatic and switched themselves off after a few minutes. Apart from that, the room was just what we needed. Thank you, Glasney Rooms!

It’s basic university campus accommodation with self-catering, but it suited me fine. You get a bed and wash facilities, and you make do. My son was made very welcome by the staff and had a great time. For me, it was the closest I’ll ever get to university life, haha. One little thing: two pillows per bed would be better. I gave mine to my boy and used towels as pillows, though it wasn’t a big deal. I’d recommend it to working-class people looking for a cheap alternative to a chain hotel. London poshos might prefer to spend their money being served elsewhere.

The whole stay at Glasney Rooms was horrendous. We arrived late after a very long drive, had to circle the campus to find the room, and couldn’t park near the block. We unloaded our luggage and then had to drive off to park elsewhere. The room, bathroom and kitchen all stank, the beds were dreadful, and scaffolding in front of the window meant we couldn’t open it. The reception staff at check-in were completely unhelpful. I booked through booking.com and gave my credit card details for payment. I’ve used the site many times and payment has always been taken automatically, so I assumed it had happened. I stayed in August, and in mid October I received a letter threatening legal action because they hadn’t received payment. Nobody told me at check-in or check-out that I needed to pay by some other method, and I’d had no email or letter asking for payment since August. Don’t stay at Glasney Rooms!

We booked four nights to see as much of Cornwall as we could in a week, and the place beat all our expectations. We’d picked it as the cheapest option among hotels, inns and B&Bs, so we weren’t expecting much. Instead, the campus was lovely and green, like a little lost forest, with wild blackberries to pick. The train station was a 10 minute walk away, and the staff were adorable and helpful. Our room was clean, cosy and comfortable, with towels, soap and loads of space for luggage, equipment and clothes. There was a fully equipped shared kitchen across the corridor. We didn’t see anyone else in it during our week. The gym was open 24/7, with a weekly membership around £20. The laundry rooms were cheap, open 24/7 and had an app connected to them so we could check the time left from bed. There was also a cute, cosy coffee shop on campus with some Starbucks products, and it doubled as a place to work. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone who doesn’t mind being 10 minutes by train from Truro!
