We arrived around 8 pm and there was no staff on site. The entrance instructions were unclear: we were given a code for the back door, but it was dark and we couldn’t see where it was. By chance, a staff member leaving roughly showed us the way to our room. The next morning there was still nobody around at 9, and we couldn’t get out because the back doors were bolted from inside and locked from outside. We only got out because the front door happened to have inside bolts as well as the Yale lock. The room was very clean, but the introduction was vague, and although we let it go when it wasn’t ready, the mattress springs could be felt. We could have helped ourselves to the bar, but if anything had happened overnight there was no one to help. This was a first for me in a bad way. With a little money spent modernising the hotel, it could be a lovely place to stay. It’s the only one in the village.

I called the Bugal hotel to book the function room for my uncle’s wake. Naomi gave me a price and said she’d send the information shortly, but it didn’t arrive until late that evening. I called several times to talk over a couple of the listed prices and was repeatedly told Naomi wasn’t there, first that she’d be back at 5 pm, then that she should be back within an hour. The next day it was the same. When I explained I wanted to discuss my uncle’s wake, the woman on the phone couldn’t have cared less. I eventually gave up and thankfully booked somewhere else, where they showed empathy and respect.

Our family occasion in the private function room was a marvellous, stress-free day. The space was perfectly set up, the food was delicious and exceeded our expectations, and we had a great time together. Natasha checked regularly that we had everything we needed, and Chef Stuart came by to make sure we were happy with the meal. The whole team were welcoming, friendly, and efficient. Before the event, Natasha was fantastic with communication and detail. One guest had food allergies, so I was reassured to speak directly with Chef Stuart about menu choices and allergens. They even offered swaps we hadn’t expected. Dropping off our cake the day before was convenient and took away some stress. We played music through the speakers and used the projector to show a slideshow from my laptop, a lovely nostalgic touch. Thanks especially to Natasha and Stuart for going above and beyond. I’d recommend ‘The Bugle’ for a special occasion, or just for a meal and a drink.

A welcoming place with amazing staff, a lovely room, and a very clean, comfortable bed. There’s a cosy country bar downstairs too. Highly recommend.

The meals were all delicious, came exactly as requested, and the portions were bigger than we expected for the price. We went as a family of nine. Although we’d booked, our table wasn’t ready, but the tasty food made up for the wait. It’s a friendly place, though the menu was confusing: the outside sign said one thing, but a dish one of us wanted wasn’t listed inside.
