The quiet by the river was lovely, with birds, running water and just a little conversation in the background. We had a great afternoon tea at Alderholt Mill. It’s a working old mill where they still grind flour, and the wholemeal scones made with it were amazing. I had coffee cake, while my sister chose Dorset apple cake with cream. Such a little gem.

Mills End was a lovely rustic room for our few nights, linked to the main back garden and reached by its own door and bridge. The ceiling is pretty low. I managed fine, but my friend, who’s 198cm, struggled to walk from one room to the next.

The garden was wonderful to stroll around, and the place felt incredibly relaxing. We had fantastic cream tea and cake, with scones baked in the mill from flour freshly ground by the water wheel. It’s run by a really lovely family. I’d highly recommend it, though get there early in the day so you’re not disappointed.

The cooked breakfast was hearty and delicious, and the shower was hot with strong pressure. We felt at home here, not like we were away on holiday. It’s a historic, cosy place with everything we needed. Local animals can be noisy, but that’s the countryside. The road carries plenty of traffic day and night, though that isn’t the Mill’s fault.
