The Fig Tree Markinch

The dining room had a lovely atmosphere, and the food was delish. There were five of us at The Fig Tree celebrating a special birthday, and we had a great night. One friend had dietary requirements and called ahead, and the staff were very helpful. Our waitress was excellent, excellent. Great value too. We’ll definitely be back, thanks for a fantastic night.

The room was filthy, with dirty floors and bed sheets that clearly hadn’t been changed. It didn’t seem properly cleaned before I arrived. On top of that, loud music and shouting went on into the early hours every night, so I couldn’t sleep. It felt more like a nightclub than a hotel. The shower was also a letdown, with terrible pressure and water that kept changing temperature, making a decent shower nearly impossible. The advertising talks up luxury, but the facilities didn’t match. I raised several concerns, and management agreed to refund me because of the poor stay. Weeks later I’m still waiting, with no resolution. I was thoroughly disappointed, and wouldn’t trust those refund promises.

Karaoke at the weekend was so loud and went past midnight. I had to work all weekend, but couldn’t rest or sleep. The shower had no pressure, and the hot and cold tap was broken, so I had to take cold showers. Not what I expected from a four-star hotel costing over £100 a night. I asked to speak to the manager about a partial refund and never heard back. Poor service and an uncomfortable stay.

Brook was lovely and gave me local recommendations. It’s a real friendly local spot, and the rooms are spacious, clean and great. I’ve been staying at the hotel for a week, and the food has been so good. Nick is clearly a great chef. I’ve tried the Full Scottish and the Venison so far, and both were really tasty. As a tourist, I was glad to try Haggis and proper Scottish food for the first time.
