It was a cheap stay in a handy spot just off the M25 and close to the Dartford crossing. The sheets were clean, and at least there's a roof and a shower. Still, I should have spent a few pounds more somewhere else after touring the continent. The room looked over a small lake, but also power lines and rubbish scattered around the hotel's edge, with overflowing skips and bags of rubbish beside them. The badly maintained, dirty windows made it hard to see much. Inside, the room and bathroom floors were dirty enough that I didn't feel comfortable walking barefoot, the soap and gel dispensers were empty, and no hairdryer was available when I asked. The corridors had worn, heavily stained carpets, and bags of rubbish sat there and on the smelly, stained fire escape stairs. I had more communication problems here than anywhere else on my travels around European hotels, and staff didn't seem to care when I raised an issue. There were few facilities, yet someone had screwed a badly fitted bottle opener to the side of the furniture. The lights were poorly fitted, with wobbly shades that lifted off, and one needed a tap to stay lit. I don't think there's a lift, so I had to carry my luggage up and down the stairs. It didn't feel like a branded Travelodge, more like a seedy independent hovel run by staff who just didn't care. You get what you pay for, and here maybe not even that.

The staff were A* and really nice and helpful, and the rooms were very clean. But the place felt gloomy and unsafe, and I kept seeing dodgy characters. The rooms are dated and short on sockets, with none beside the beds. I couldn't wait to leave and don't plan to return, even with such good staff.

The room was larger than usual and had a surprisingly nice lake view, considering it's next to the M25. Parking is included, which is a plus, and check-in and check-out were both quick. The staff were super friendly. You can hear quite a bit from other rooms, including doors opening and closing and TVs.

I stayed for four nights and wasn't given fresh towels or linen, and the bin wasn't emptied once. When I asked for a spare chair because there wasn't one in the room, I was abruptly told no. The beds looked as if the previous guest had made them, and not very well. There was mould around the bathroom silicone and only half a toilet roll on the shelf. After getting in through the front entrance, I walked along a grubby carpeted corridor to the room, which reminded me of a downtown Delhi hotel. I arrived at the rear after following the sat nav and was confronted by more than ten rats with tattoos and three legs. I had to make my way through several housekeeping carts to reach the front entrance. I don't think I'll ever stay there again.

We had only one pillow to share, the room was filthy, there were loads of spider webs, and the curtains didn't even cover the window. Even the toilet roll was dirty, and there was no soap. I felt so grossed out that I showered as soon as I got home. The staff were blunt and a little rude, and I couldn't find the place to save my life. It's a shame I have to give it one star. Never again. Honestly, I think I'm traumatised.
