The Angel is right in the town centre, handy for going out without a long walk. Our room was enormous, with a lovely shower, a comfortable bed and high-quality bedding. Getting there from reception was confusing, with levels, twists and turns, and quite a long walk. There’s no bar. Breakfast is at the adjoining BILLS, and it’s expensive: £20 for an English breakfast, toast and coffee. There’s no hotel parking, only public car parks, though they were cheap at £4.50 for 24 hours.

I didn’t expect to have a sitting room as well as a double ensuite, so finding the hotel suite had both was a nice surprise. It was clean and airy, and I slept well despite being right on the high street, where there wasn’t much noise. The bed was one of the comfiest I’ve slept in. In the morning, a violinist was playing on the high street, which made it feel cozy.

Our ensuite room at the back of the hotel was a good size, clean and had all the usual facilities. It was nice and quiet there, though getting to it meant quite a walk from the entrance. A dressing table mirror would have been useful. The high street location makes it a great base for exploring Guildford.

Shalini was outstanding, friendly and quick to help, going above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. Symantec was friendly and helpful too. The staff are what make this hotel special. It’s a beautiful, quirky building in the town centre, with some age-related quirks such as lots of stairs and low water pressure in some rooms. This will be our first choice when we stay in Guildford.

The room was palatial, and I was greeted straight away with a smile and an offer to take my bags. Couldn’t ask for a better spot in Guildford. An excellent hotel, suitable for any occasion.
