The spa was the main reason we booked, but it was packed, noisy and short on chairs, so there was no chance to relax. We also tried the nearby Indian restaurant recommended by the hotel, and I wouldn't recommend going there either. Our room was clean but small, and it was in a courtyard cottage outside the hotel, which didn't feel much like a hotel stay. The grounds are so spread out that it takes about 15 minutes to walk out to the road. The hotel itself was okay, but for the price, I wouldn't return. I guess with a place like this you're paying for the name.
The staff in the Trophy Bar were really nice, and the area was very clean. I had the Poke Bowl, which was tasty, though there were loads of crispy onions and the edamame were still in their shells, making the beans messy to dig out. It's a salad bowl without rice, a nice change from standard bar food, but £20 felt pricey for a bar menu salad. Breakfast was fantastic, and the reception and bar staff couldn't have been more helpful. My spacious room had a lovely lakeside view and was good value. I arrived early on check-in day and could use the spa, with towels provided and clean changing rooms. A mother and baby class ran for several hours, but didn't disrupt things much.
The setting is stunning, and the old building is beautiful, though TVs in the bar restaurant take away from its historic charm. We had free access to the outstanding gym and the okay pool and sauna, but the pool area could use more regular cleaning. At dinner, we waited 40 minutes and then got the wrong order. Other tables received complimentary drinks, while we felt ignored. We'd also been given the wrong menus at reception for the Valentine's special, so after sitting down we had an awkward exchange before deciding against the set menu and moving to the bar restaurant. The welcome itself was friendly, and David greeted us with complimentary bubbles. Good breakfast, too, with a brilliant manager warmly welcoming everyone. A fire in the evening, some extra refreshments and more professional service would make it a five-star stay.
The grounds have lovely views and walks, so I'd come back in summer. The gym and swimming pool were free, and we made use of both. Our first night was disturbed, but they refunded us for that night. The rooms were clean and tidy, the breakfast was amazing, and the restaurant was way above par. The head of house gave us an excellent welcome and deserves thanks for sorting the refund. I think the gentleman's name was David. The huge building could use a little updating here and there, and we got lost a couple of times, which added to the adventure. It was a lovely little getaway, and we'll definitely return.
The staff were friendly, but seemed confused about their own refund process. We paid for room service through the app, waited 45 minutes, then our order disappeared, so we had to go downstairs to collect it. When we asked for the room service charge back, reception sent us to the restaurant, and the restaurant sent us back to reception, who refused. Our double bed had a single duvet; when we raised it, they apologised and changed it, but all the apologies didn't make the stay better. We wanted a stress-free weekend and didn't want to spend a day dealing with problems. The food was average, and the rooms and hotel feel tired. The old building looks beautiful from the entrance, and I wish I could say more positive things because the place has potential. I definitely wouldn't call it four-star, two-star at best.
