Plas Derwen Hotel

Having stayed here years ago, I came back recently and was amazed at how much the place had changed. The renovated rooms are modern, comfortable, and well equipped, and you can see the effort that’s gone into the improvements. Local residents of Abergavenny own and run the hotel, which gives it a warm, welcoming atmosphere. A pleasant choice for a relaxing stay in the area. Highly recommended.

The staff made the stay feel more like being with friends than simply booking a room. They were warm, attentive, and clearly cared about making guests feel special. Our room was spotless, stylish, and spacious. If you’re visiting Abergavenny, staying here is part of the experience, not just a place to sleep.

For a large venue, it was fairly quiet on a Thursday evening in December, though a few people were in. The place looks clean and modern, apart from the restaurant carpet, which needs replacing. There was a small Christmas party, so service ran a little slowly. The staff were pleasant, and the meals were much better than I usually expect at a Brains establishment, though they cost more and seemed fairly priced. The duck salad starter was superb.

We arrived early so we could order at the time we’d agreed, with a party of 30 due later and the restaurant still very quiet. Even so, our meals came out at different times, and the steaks were so overcooked they weren’t edible. My middle daughter waited 30 minutes after the first meal arrived before getting hers. The service was a disaster. I’ve visited this pub many times, but this was my last visit. If they couldn’t manage our table of seven, I feel for the party of 30.
