The Bowes Hotel feels more like a mid-range hotel than a pub. The rooms are elegant and really comfortable, and the dining room is spacious with a fairly sophisticated feel. We ate very well, and the staff were friendly. Ian, the owner, is a great guy and a traveller himself. I stayed one night while hiking the Pennine Way. It’s a few miles off the trail, but still convenient, and perhaps a little more relaxed than places nearer Hadrian's Wall. Excellent hotel!

The room was a bit small, and the window onto the front street was only 2ft from the bed, so four stars for the room. Still, it was clean, modern, warm and comfortable. I’d arrived 30 min early after riding my motorcycle through all kinds of weather most of the day, hoping I could get in, and they let me. The bar staff were brilliant, friendly, helpful and informative. My bike was secured off the front street, behind doors in a side driveway beside the building. The food and drinks at the bar were tasty and good value, with good service and choice. Breakfast was very good too, and the attentive staff and relaxed set-up left me feeling content before setting off.

We stayed for one night. The rooms were clean, lovely and laid out well, and the staff may be the friendliest I’ve ever met. Good food and drinks, with fair prices. Great pub, highly recommended.

I ran 70 kilometers for dementia and arrived in bardon mill to Catherine at The Bowes taking me in and looking after me. She gave me water and food, plus a cooked breakfast on the house. Her client Bree even offered me a shower and facilities so I could freshen up. The comfort and care were second to none, unlike anything I’ve experienced at another place. What a kind and unexpected encounter. Why haven’t we booked a room here already? I’ll be back soon with the whole family tribe. So much love and thanks to Catherine and Bree, you made my year.

We also popped into the local pottery next door. We had Sunday lunch here and the food and service were great. Lovely surroundings and staff, with very reasonable prices.
