The name is wrong. Local speech drops unwanted h sounds, so Hillhouse, as it appears on old maps where my Great Grandfather lived, was said as 'ill'oos. The census officer heard it that way and entered 'Hillis' in the register.

Lovely views from the garden, where there are benches to sit on. The cottage is very nice, with parking onsite, and a wood-burning fire that heats both the water and the central heating.

Close to Hadrian's Wall, this is a clean, tidy farm cottage with welcoming, friendly hosts. A charming place.
