The room was roomy, with a comfortable bed, a decent shower and a huge TV. The pub has all the things I want in a country pub: open fires, well-kept cask ales and nicely cooked food. The Kirkstall brewed Green Dragon was spot on each time. It’s dog friendly, and the staff did everything we needed. I hope to be back soon.

I stayed here in November 2025 with my good friend James, and the place had a lot of character. It’s an old pub, not a modernized version of one, and I think that’s part of its charm. Don’t put too much stock in the bad reviews, which may come from pretentious people who are rude to staff and don’t understand the place. Come see for yourself. We tried around five dishes, including fish and chips, duck and meat pie. Everything was perfect, with no complaints. My room was just as good: cozy, comfortable, clean, in order and had all I needed. Sarah made sure of that. The staff made us feel like family. Lawrence, Sarah, Kit and another woman whose name I can’t remember were all great. The owners should be proud. The cask ale was fresh and well kept, and anyone who appreciates cask ale should be happy with the cellars. We also had a lovely chat with some locals, a farmer and a musician.

The standard room was on the small side, and the walls are thin enough that we could hear TVs and people talking or snoring. It also wasn’t clear how check-in and breakfast worked, so instructions like whether to find your own seat or order at the bar would help. Even with those niggles, we had a lovely winter stay in February. The history and atmosphere were just right for a cozy break, with nice decor, fireplaces, delicious food and a great shower. I’d definitely recommend it as a base for exploring the area, or simply for a good meal.

We tried this place twice while in Hawes over New Year, first for drinks and then for a family meal after a long walk. We booked for the meal, and I asked for a table in the main area beside the lovely range fire. They made it happen. Even at such a busy, demanding time for hospitality, the staff were attentive and helpful. The dark rooms and fires made for a wonderful atmosphere. We enjoyed a good mix of beers and cask ales, with Wensleydale Semer Water my favourite. The food was as expected and fairly priced.

Calling them by phone before our visit didn’t work, as no one answered. The online booking system was easy, though, and I’d suggest contacting them electronically. Booking is a good idea because it gets busy, especially with Saturday evening music in the function room at the back. The pub was cozy despite the poor weather, and there are outdoor tables too. It’s dog friendly, has a large free car park and sits in lovely countryside five minutes from Hawes. Inside, it feels very old world, with exposed stone, big real fires and three Christmas trees. Candles on the tables add to the atmosphere in the evening. There’s a large choice of ales, wine and spirits, and plenty on the menu. The food was great, with generous portions. The homemade Yorkshire pudding was the biggest I’ve ever seen, definitely not Aunt Bessie's. Breakfast had cereals and dried fruit as well as a good hot selection. The portions were smaller than at other meals, but everything was well cooked and delicious. It was nice to have fried, scrambled or poached eggs as options. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We plan to return in the new year.
