Shaftoes Guest House

The building’s history is fascinating, so take time to read about it. We loved this hotel, one of our favourites during a three-month trip. It overlooks the river and a charming English town, and the staff were helpful and friendly whenever we spoke to them. Our room was quiet and comfortable, and breakfast was as good as it gets. We’d highly recommend it.

I spotted the Anchor Hotel while crossing the South Tyne on the newer vehicle bridge and thought I’d stop for a beer and see what was going on. It’s in a prime riverside spot, with outdoor seating and a car park. Inside, the historic hotel was very quiet on a Monday lunchtime. A charming Philippino woman was doing the books when she greeted me.

The bars were clean, and the evening had a lively feel. I spent a couple of hours on the deck looking out over the River South Tyne, with lovely views. The beer selection was okay and reasonably priced. I didn’t see the rooms or try the food.

The decor is quite original and dated, but there was nothing wrong with it. The bed had two mattresses for some reason, though it was still okay. Across the river there’s a good pub for drinks, and a chippy and pizza shop are across the road.
