The food is reason enough to stop at the Bower House Inn. The menu has plenty of choice, and the kitchen does a great job, from a generous classic savoury pie to a more unusual Moroccan lamb pudding. That lamb was rich and delicious, with gravy and spicy vegetables that worked perfectly. The desserts are simple pub puddings, carefully made and a satisfying finish. After eating, we spent some time in the relaxed beer garden with a drink and a bit of friendly family cornhole competition. It's a lovely spot. Inside, the low ceilings and traditional game bird paintings give the old inn a warm, unpretentious feel that suits the beautiful Eskdale valley. Well worth a stop.

A lovely place to stay, eat, or have a drink. There's plenty of parking, friendly staff, and a beautiful garden with views. Prices are very reasonable too. I can't remember the last time I got a pint for under £5!

We only stopped for dinner, but what a meal. The food was fabulous, the portions generous, and the beer very good too. The warm atmosphere made it feel like a perfect place to stop after a Lake District hike.

The garden out back has a cracking view, and the location is great. For the money, I'd say it's worth it, about an 8/10. The old building is full of character, with beam ceilings, and the staff were friendly and attentive. That beefburger was a real wow. Prices are what they are in 2026, so I'll leave you to judge the figure, but the taste made it worthwhile. We stayed two days in the accessible twin. The bathroom tiles look like there may have been water damage before, and the floor tiles have lifted and come loose. Some have cracked, so it could be a bit of a hazard on bare feet and needs relaying. The bedroom floor is noisy and uneven in places, though it is an old barn conversion. The room also stayed quite warm with the radiator off and the window open. That might be nice in winter, but it was a little uncomfortable with May temperatures at night. Breakfast was included and very nice. I had the full house. If I'm being picky, I would've preferred locally sourced sausages. These were possibly Richmond or cheap catering chipolatas, and they were quite salty. That isn't my taste, and Cumberland sausages would have suited the location. Just little tweaks, and they'd nail it.

I stayed for a night before climbing Scaffel Pike the next day, which was close enough to make this an ideal base. Breakfast was included and really good. The Eggs Royal was so nice 🙂
