The restaurant was a pleasure, with delicious local food at both dinner and breakfast, and the staff were warm, relaxed, and polite. We also loved the beautiful views and even met some ponies. It’s a calm, restorative place. My husband and I stayed at The Pig at Combe for a short break in May 2025, and our request for a quiet room was met with one in the stable block, away from the main house. It was an accessible room, all on one level with no steps or slopes, which could suit someone with mobility issues. The approach does cross an uneven cobblestone courtyard, though. There was a split en-suite, with a large walk-in shower and optional pull-down seat on one side, and a separate toilet on the other. Both had sinks. No air conditioning, but there was an oscillating fan, and the stable door let us leave the top half open for a breeze on a hot afternoon.

We live nearby and have been to the Pig at Combe countless times over the years. We bring guests here, and it’s never let us down. Will has been especially kind and hospitable to our family, and the whole team is lovely, smiling, and attentive. The place feels relaxed, friendly, and courteous. There’s a lot to enjoy beyond the service: log fires in winter, beautiful gardens in summer, and gorgeous shabby-chic interiors in a fantastic setting. The food is unfailingly excellent, with almost everything on the menu sourced within 25 miles and much of the fruit and veg grown in the immaculate gardens. Prices are very reasonable for food of this standard. We can’t praise it enough. It’s a model of excellence and a fun, laid-back way to spend a day or a couple of nights.

The location is stunning, and it’s a gorgeous, idyllic, quirky place. We’d gone back for my birthday after enjoying a wonderful cheese platter and the best local Pinot Noir in summer. This time, though, we were both very disappointed by the food. The monkfish was rubbery and impossible to cut with a knife, the mackerel smelled and definitely didn’t seem fresh or local, and the lamb chop was overcooked. The dessert menu was odd and limited, although the wine selection was lovely and the staff quite attentive. No place is perfect, and I’m fairly demanding after eating some spectacular food in my life, but at £70 per person just for food, I expected more.

Everyone was friendly, and they were really accommodating about my allergies. The food was exceptional, and the service couldn’t be replicated. I had the honour of staying at the pig, which was quite frankly the best hotel in Devon. It was very relaxing, and I’d recommend a pig stay to friends and family.

The staff were lovely and the cocktails were great, but I felt ripped off. The menu was uninspiring, basically meat and two veg, and the prices seemed inflated. £24 for porridge? The Pig has lost its charm for me. With so many amazing independent restaurants and stylish boutiques opening in the countryside, I’m bowing out of this chain.
