Hope Cove still feels much as I remember it from childhood visits 66 years ago. The village is small and charming, and the beach is outstanding when the tide’s out. If you’re after arcades and candyfloss, this probably isn’t your kind of beach break. For sea air, brilliant beaches, walks and a fantastic pub, it’s hard to beat. We stayed for three days in the first week of March. Our room was magnificent, big, warm and nicely furnished, with a sofa, chairs, a table, drinks and a mini bar. The huge bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious and spotless. We could hear the waves from the beach about 100 years away, which lulled us to sleep. The terrace was sheltered enough to sit outside even in March, and blankets were laid over the chairs for when the sun went down. The welcome was friendly and efficient, and the staff kept that same helpful, smiling manner throughout. I don’t want to praise it too much in case it gets booked up, but we’ll be back soon. This is definitely somewhere I’d return to.

We’ve been twice now, and the second visit was just as good. The place had a lively, friendly atmosphere, and the waiter, who’d only been there a couple of weeks, was cheerful and made us feel so welcome. She was lovely with Vera, our friend’s lovely lab, too. All three of us ordered the sea bass catch of the day, and it was cooked perfectly. The cherry and almond crumble was amazing as well. Thanks, we’ll be back!

The pub’s in a great spot, and the atmosphere throughout was lovely. Staff were brilliant and the food was excellent. We gave the room just three stars, though, because it was missing a few things: bedside lights, a bathroom shelf, and better lighting.

We came back last weekend with our family, 50 years after my wife and I spent our honeymoon at the Hope & Anchor. The staff made us all feel welcome and were happy to help with anything. There was a very good choice of beers, lager, cider and wines, and the food menu was excellent. We had seven rooms, each with different furniture and its own quirky feel. Cross the road, go down a few steps, and you’re on Hope Cove beach. Awesome! I’ll post again soon about the wonderful staff.

The food was gorgeous, especially the fish and chips, which was my highlight. The fish was huge and so tasty. Our spotless rooms had lovely decor, and the beds were so comfortable I slept like a log. The staff were friendly and the service was fantastic. We had a wonderful weekend at the Hope & Anchor and can’t wait to come back. What a hidden gem. :)
