Cheshire House

The beds were extremely firm, and the pillows felt like bags of sand with no support. Both my friend and I slept very badly. We hadn’t brought our own pillows, and really shouldn’t have needed to. With better beds and pillows, this would have been a five star place. The room itself was lovely, with modern decor, quirky lighting, a good sized TV and a nice modern bathroom with a good shower. Check-in was easy, and checkout at 10 was a bit early, though the process was simple. We also had nice views from the room.

We booked the Mam Tor room at Cheshire Mews for our first visit, and it was spotless with everything we needed. The huge king size bed was very comfortable, the window view was lovely, and having convenient parking right outside was a bonus. Set back from the main road, it was quiet and comfortable, and being dog friendly made it even more appealing. Check-in and checkout were simple. There’s a neat little coffee shop just steps away that opens early, plus plenty of places to eat nearby. Great location. We’ll definitely be back.

We had a short visit and would happily stay again next time we’re in Castleton. Prices were very reasonable, and the owner communicated well. The views were great, and the rooms were clean and modern. The room only option still gets you a breakfast discount at the Cheshire cheese pub across from the property, right in central Castleton. Parking is available. The bed was very comfortable, the heating worked well, and the room was nicely warm. There was a good walk-in shower, fridge, television, kettle, and basic drinks including coffee, tea and milk.

We enjoyed our weekend in Castleton, and the location of Cheshire Mews apartments is ideal for walkers or anyone who loves Castleton, as my wife and I do. The rear views are fantastic. But the rooms need more care and a better finish. They lack the final touches that could make them beautiful, cosy and homely. The bathroom was really nice and finished to a high standard, while the room walls were marked in several places and poorly patched where the bed seems to have been moved and the headboard fixed before. The fridge in the corner froze everything, whatever setting we tried, including the milk in the door. There was an oversized tray on top holding the kettle and drink sachets. A small worktop attached to the wall above the fridge would have made more sense and looked less unfinished. The thermostat was locked; we could set the temperature, but it would drop to a low level after a while, leaving my wife and me cold because we spent a lot of time in the room. The pillows honestly felt like sandbags. We were glad we brought our own, as otherwise we couldn’t have slept comfortably for even one night, let alone two. Given the location and views, I’d expect the rooms to be finished to a high standard and kept in excellent condition. Repairs should be done properly, without looking unsightly.
