The location in a Peak District valley means a storm can make for a very noisy night. During the Met Office storm warning, the front windows held firm, but the wind howled and roared through the night. There isn't much insulation from that noise, so if you need quiet to sleep, earplugs might help. We arrived to a spacious room that felt a little cold, but the radiator was easy to switch on and there was a spare oil heater. By the time we'd eaten in the evening, the room was comfortably warm. The property has plenty of charm and sits above the Castle Pub, where you check in and find the bar staff and restaurant. It's a little pricier than I expected, though the other hotels were in a similar bracket. The town itself is beautiful and makes a good base for exploring. I stayed during a storm warning, so that context matters for some of these comments.

We spent the afternoon having drinks by the open fire after arriving at 1pm on Boxing Day for our overnight stay. We were booked in for Christmas dinner at 5, after checking in at 3, and all of us chose turkey. At £36.50 each for three courses, we expected much better. It honestly felt like a microwave meal from Iceland, a huge letdown. We didn't complain until the end because, typically British, we worried the chef might get the local stray cat to lick our dinners. We skipped breakfast in case that disappointed too. Wouldn't recommend.

The room was clean and comfortable, but breakfast service took a long time and there wasn't a gluten-free option. Just after 7am, two vans parked below our room in the car park and started working on the drains. That felt unreasonably early.

The family room was really spacious and set up well for the kids. A cleaner came in during the day and left extra biscuits for our daughter. Great hotel.

Everyone was friendly and helpful, especially Sophie and Molly, who were polite and made sure we had what we needed. The food was delicious, and check-in and check-out both went smoothly. We were at The Castle for my partner’s birthday weekend and a visit to Speedwell Cavern. After I asked about the birthday packages, they quickly confirmed these were included at no extra cost. Our room was ready with balloons, a banner and a birthday card, plus a lovely view of the castle. We had a fantastic time and will definitely return.
