The Maynard

I’ve stayed several times and have always had a warm welcome. The rooms are really good, and the hotel is beautifully placed for walks around Hathersage. The showers are unpredictable, though. Sometimes they’re fine, other times they’ll burn you or go freezing cold. The food menu is good, but breakfast keeps disappointing me and the portions feel needlessly small. The quality is fine, not sensational, so those tiny portions don’t feel justified.

The Maynard was lovely throughout, and we were very pleased with our room. The staff had left a birthday note and chocolates for my husband, which was a thoughtful touch, and breakfast was lovely with very good service. We were there to celebrate his 60th, so the evening meal was a letdown. The food itself was good, but after finishing our starters we waited an hour for the main course, even though the restaurant wasn’t especially busy. We skipped dessert in the end, worried it might mean another hour’s wait. We were happy with everything else, but nobody even said sorry for the delay.

The Maynard was a birthday gift from my daughter and her partner last year, and I had a lovely one-night visit. The room was spacious and clean, with a very comfortable bed and tea and coffee facilities. It was quiet, and I slept really well. Everywhere was clean and laid out nicely. We had a drink in the bar, which was very pleasant and not too busy despite it being a bank holiday weekend. Breakfast the next morning was delicious, arrived quickly, and there was plenty of it. I’d happily recommend the Maynard and hope to return.

The room was cosy and really comfortable, and dogs were made very welcome. The Maynard is in a wonderful spot right in the middle of the Peak District. The staff were lovely, friendly, and keen to help. We had delicious food, beautifully presented, from the restaurant’s fantastic menu, and there was a really good wine list.
