We had a really good evening in a lovely setting, and the staff were polite, efficient and well organised. All four of us enjoyed three courses, and the food was delicious. The starters included fish cake, soufflé and scallops; for mains we had cod, chicken and chateaubriand. We also tried sticky toffee pudding, crème brûlée and brownie with chocolate sauce and pistachio ice cream. A couple of things took the shine off it. The shared chateaubriand tasted great, but looked plain on the plate with only half a tomato and no vegetables. We asked for some, then waited 10 minutes for spinach and broccoli, which cost an extra £11. It might help to make clear that vegetables aren't included. We were also offered sauce and chose two jugs of blue cheese sauce, at £7 each. We weren't told one jug would have been enough for both of us, so that brought the chateaubriand to £107 altogether. The brownie looked pretty with a streak of chocolate sauce under it and the ice cream, but there wasn't really enough sauce to eat. Even with those niggles, it was a great experience and a lovely place for a special occasion.

We keep coming back here for special occasions. The place is a delight, and the superb service and exceptional food have never let us down. You pay for quality and the little extras, and we've always felt it was worth it.

The care and service were spot on, and the steak was amazing. We had a fantastic meal at Brownlow last night.

The beds are supremely comfortable, and breakfast was beyond excellent. This wonderful country pub is just a little way off the A1 and A17, with what a traveller or reveller might need.

We had dinner there last night and really liked the atmosphere and service. The food was fabulous too. It's a lovely old country house with fine food, a real hidden gem. We'll definitely visit again. x
