The room was basic but warm and clean, the beds were comfortable, and tea, coffee and shower gel were provided. There are great views from the top of a large hill, and I was glad it didn’t snow. We stayed for two nights to be near family. I’d stay at the hotel again for the value, but definitely wouldn’t eat there, apart from possibly the continental breakfast. We arrived tired from the journey and chose to eat in the bar restaurant. There was no one around, and ringing the bell got no response. Another couple arrived and rang too. Eventually the young lady handling reception came to serve in the bar as well. There were only four people eating. We and the other couple ordered food. We both ordered medium steaks, but both couples sent their meals back. Our steak was overcooked and rock hard, the mushrooms were black and hard as though cooked again, and the chips tasted of old oil. The other couple went out to find a shop for food. At breakfast another young lady was doing reception and waiting on. There was a good selection of juice, cereal, pastries and a full English, but I was served the black, hard mushroom from the night before. The bacon was hard and seemed reheated, though the poached egg, black pudding and tomato were fine. There was no one at reception when we needed to check in either. We rang the bell, and eventually a young lady came. Even though we’d paid in advance, we had to hand over a credit card so they could hold £100 in case we had extras and to cover the room being left in good condition. I said we’d pay for anything we’d had. The young ladies seemed to be running every department, and they were fine and did their best. We felt bad telling them about the food, since it wasn’t their fault. I think it’s part of Adnans group, and they ought to look at staffing instead of having young ladies do everything.

The location is pretty, the staff were lovely and the service was good. Dinner surprised us in a good way and was better than our admittedly low expectations. The hotel was freezing, and we couldn’t find a way to make the room warmer. It’s run down and a bit grotty, mostly in need of some TLC throughout rather than being unclean, though there were a few stray hairs on the sheets. Breakfast was appalling: cereal, croissants, toast and yoghurt, with no cheese, meats or real fruit.

The views are amazing, and the rooms are OK. The staff are kind and want to help. This place has the makings of a great venue for a wedding or birthday bash, with a bit of care and attention. The bar lighting is way too bright and cold, like a 1990’s working men’s club. It feels like there are roadworks going on in there. The breakfast was a little difficult to chew. Bring sunglasses and zinc for the bar.

The beds are comfortable, and the view is astounding, with plenty of genuine Pennine wind. It’s quite an old-fashioned hotel, from the plumbing to the electrical fittings. Reception let the place down. The two young women, one on in the evening and one in the morning, were professional but not very welcoming. The young man on nights was especially nice. At 2am I couldn’t open the bathroom door, and he sorted it quickly. The door handle was very stiff, circular with no purchase and badly placed, but he was strong enough to get it open.

The location was gorgeous, the food absolutely delicious and the service brilliant when my partner and I went for the 3 course meal today. We’ll definitely go again. I also noticed the Christmas dinner was 49.95, so we might book that.
