The Elgin Kintore Arms, Inverurie

The room was a little dated, though I hear they’re planning to refurbish soon. It was comfortable enough, with a good bed, but oddly the room radiator wasn’t on while the bathroom one was roasting. We stayed one night in a family room and had arranged an early check-in by email. The staff member who helped was fantastic, and we were able to get in before 3 pm for an extra fee, which we appreciated. Everyone at the hotel was friendly and helpful, including the welcoming gentleman at reception. Breakfast had cereal, toast, deli items and cooked food; I’d have liked tattie scones and more pastries, such as pain au chocolat or cinnamon swirls. We also got a highchair without any trouble. Free parking is available at both the front and back. We had a pleasant stay.

Four generations of us had a lovely Mother’s Day lunch. The portions were huge, the meals came piping hot and were nicely presented, and it was great value. There was a good choice on the kids menu too. The staff were really friendly and attentive. We’re looking forward to going back.

The food was a real highlight, from the Scotch broth in the evening to the grapefruit at breakfast. Good prices and service, and lovely staff. My room furniture was cheap but practical, and the place is dated, though it has a certain charm. It could use a refurb, as long as it keeps its character. There were lots of locals drinking there, which says something. No complaints from me, and I’ll stay again next time I’m in Inverurie.

Avoid room 1. You can hear people in the next room and anyone walking along the corridor, so it’s very noisy. The bathroom was a mess too: weak shower, a hot water tap that didn’t work and a toilet that flushed once, then took about 40 minutes to refill. The carpet was badly fitted with holes, and there was a hole in the lino as well. Cracks and damp on the walls, plus a TV remote with no battery cover that wouldn’t work.
