We had a great holiday home for four, with stunning views of the Cullin mountain range and sea lochs. Wildlife and farm animals were all around, including birds, sheep, deer and cows. The house had plenty of firewood, books, maps and games, plus a fully equipped kitchen. The single-track road up to the house gets quite steep in places, but even in snow we didn’t need a 4x4 or anything like that.

With no street lights, it gets completely dark. On a clear night, put on your midge gear and step outside for a carpet of spectacular stars. The views towards the Black Culling mountains are heavenly, and deer, sheep and cows roam free. The cottage was comfortable and had everything we wanted, right down to wellingtons. Motorhomes aren’t ideal on these roads, and you need a 4x4 such as a Land Rover. You might or might not be susceptible, but it took us all week to realise the bats weren’t hitting the windows. On our last day, things were moving around and doors were opening while we were in bed. Even so, we’d love to come back if we can afford it.
