Room 5 is tiny and pretty disgusting. The bed’s ancient, with a thin old mattress that’s extremely uncomfortable. There’s dried blood on some furniture, and the tiny shower has mould where the grout should be. The carpet is disgusting too. Getting up those steep, tatty stairs was bad enough. I’ve only just arrived and have four nights here, which I’m not looking forward to. I also banged my head on the low door as I was leaving. It’s basically an attic room and shouldn’t be let out. Shame on the owners for greedily trying to use this “space”. I’ve stayed in one of the bigger downstairs rooms before, and it wasn’t too bad. It’s still budget accommodation and a bit grubby, but better than the attic rooms.

Bring your own toiletries and washing up liquid.

The room was huge, spotless, and completely updated, with a modern kitchen and bathroom. The photos don't do it justice. It’s right in the centre, too, and parking is free after 6pm. I’d happily come back!

It worked for a single night on the way through, and the price was fair for what you get. The place is right in the centre, but the noise made it hard to relax: there’s a taxi rank outside, lots of shouting from people leaving the bars, and the windows barely block any sound. There’s no reception or staff, and breakfast isn’t included. If I visit Kelso again, I’d look farther out so I could get some sleep.

A lovely spot in a small town on the English-Scottish border. There’s no reception, so you call the number on the door to get in the first time, then collect your room keys once inside.
