Portland House

I booked just six hours before arriving, while already on the train, and they were very accommodating. I was travelling alone on a whim to get away from stress, but they made me feel welcome from the start. The hosts know the local area well and gave me great advice. At breakfast they were friendly and chatty, and served a hearty meal, even if you might not finish it. They also lent me their own shoes, umbrellas, hiking sticks, and raincoats so I could enjoy myself without worrying. Their hospitality made a big difference. When I return, I wouldn't stay anywhere else. If you call and book directly, their prices are much better than other places. Booking.com will cost more for obvious reasons. You can't go wrong choosing this place.

Colin and Sarah were superb hosts, and nothing seemed like too much trouble during our fabulous three night stay. Breakfast was excellent, and the complimentary coffee and cakes were a lovely extra. We'll be back.

The room was second to none, and the bed was more comfortable than any I've slept in, even my own. Collin welcomed us warmly and had a great sense of humour, especially considering he was running the place by himself during our stay. There was a huge choice at breakfast, all great quality. I'd definitely start with the fruit bowl before the hearty full English.

I'd stayed at Portland House before and will return. The value and quality of service gave me the freedom to enjoy three wonderful days of walking without worrying about anything. Excellent breakfast, and the complimentary cake and coffee made the trip memorable. Thank you, Colin.
