It was cold and wet when we stayed at the Coledale Inn in mid February, but the hotel felt warm and welcoming. There were log fires going in each of the downstairs bars. Our room was clean and warm, with a fabulous view of the mountains opposite, and every member of staff we met was brilliant and helped make the stay very pleasant.

The pie was genuinely good and might have been worth £20, but the sea bass at £24 was disappointing. My sister and I ordered it, while a few others had the pie. The fish and prawns tasted reasonably good, but there was only a little garlic butter, swallowed up by plain, unseasoned boiled and crushed potatoes. The vegetables were barely cooked and rock hard, with no flavour added. They could've been sautéed with oil and herbs, but instead tasted like wartime cooking, boiled in water for two minutes. I could've broken a tooth on them. For that price, they need to do much better.

The food was excellent and great value for money, and we'd definitely return. We ate in the bar, which had a huge open fire and felt very welcoming. Our rooms were lovely, clean, spacious and had fantastic views. Service was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. We had to leave early for Whinlatter Parkrun and couldn't have breakfast, so we asked for breakfast cobs to go. They didn't disappoint. We expected one each and got two! We'd recommend The Coledale Inn. Thanks.

We only stopped for a drink, but the bar staff were friendly and very helpful. The food menu looks good, and there's an extensive wine list, so we'll definitely come back before heading home. It was all decked out beautifully for Christmas.

I had the best steak pie I've ever eaten. It's a lovely old pub with friendly staff and proper traditional pub grub. When we're staying in Braithwaite, it's a must visit at least once.
