It's a lovely, quirky place and we'd definitely stay again. Since it was built in 1609, it isn't a modern hotel, but that adds to its character. Breakfast was very good, with quality ingredients. The station is only a couple of minutes' walk away, and Bath and Bristol are both ten minutes by train, making it a perfect base for day trips.

The vegetables were sparse and disappointing: a little cabbage, undercooked parsnips, a couple of green beans, one carrot and two so-called roast potatoes. I had to ask several times for horseradish sauce, and the Yorkshire puddings were bought in. Even before we sat down, we were told there was no cauliflower cheese. This was a big letdown, especially as previous Sunday lunches had been absolutely wonderful. We won't be back for Sunday lunch any time soon, and two other tables felt the same.

This was nowhere near the advertised standard and needs major improvement. We raised the problems with staff and by email, but even with a small discount, the issues carried on and our weekend was ruined. The double room was cramped, dated and noisy, and weekend Christmas events sent loud music thumping through the floors until late. It felt like we were in bed inside the pub. After closing, we heard noises in the walls that sounded like mice or rats, which raised serious hygiene concerns. Damaged fire exits and a faulty room lock also made us worry about safety. The car park is tiny, with a very narrow entrance. Definitely not a three star hotel.

The room smelled musty, was cold and noisy, and the heater didn't work. Eventually they brought an old heater that barely did the job. It was beside a main road, with cars rushing past late into the night. The room was tired and unclean, and nothing like the website pictures. I was told it was an upgrade, but there was no freestanding bath, despite me paying for one. I accidentally booked Saturday night, but was charged the Saturday rate for Friday after being told they'd switch the booking. They said money taken for Saturday would be refunded, and that I would be reimbursed for a night I hadn't stayed, but they didn't refund it. I was told my Saturday booking had been switched to Friday at their end, as other hotels have done, and I was given a refund after saying the stay had fallen short of the bare basics. I don't think the reviews are verified. At breakfast, I asked for fruit salad listed on the menu, but was given a large bowl of very old, unprepared fruit. They gave me a basic menu with every option, including eggs, and then claimed there was no fruit salad on the menu. Their response is completely inaccurate. I've travelled for 16 months without problems elsewhere, and this was the worst place I've stayed. This place needs serious attention. Don't waste your money.

The room was cold, and the service was awful. We had to go and find staff to order drinks, then again for food, and a third time for the bill. I can't think of anything redeeming about the place. Definitely wouldn't return.
