Dinner brought everyone together around one table, and the conversation was great. During my two nights there, guests and staff came from Scotland, England, Austria, Switzerland, the USA, and Brazil, all sharing a meal in a very Highland setting. The locally sourced food was simply prepared but cooked well, and there were good wines and whiskies too. Adrian, winter king Oli, and the rest of the team made me feel welcome straight away. It felt like staying in a home rather than a hotel, which others have mentioned too. The room had a lovely view, a comfortable bed, and a generously sized shower, especially for the price. WiFi worked in parts of the building when I needed it, though going without it would make for a good digital detox. On the drive from Lairg I spotted a golden eagle and stags with multi-point antlers. I saw the northern lights on my first night, then had another clear, starry sky the next evening. The suggested walk up the track leads up the hillside and to the back loch, where you can really take in how peaceful and isolated the place is. It’s within a reasonable drive of the North Coast’s beaches, brochs, birdwatching spots, and the nearby glens and straths. The Forsinard tea room near the RSPB site is also worth a stop, with a great cafe, gift shop, and welcoming hosts. The Garvault is a distinctive place and I’d highly recommend experiencing its Highland spirit.

The staff are lovely, friendly people who are happy to help, talk, and make you feel welcome. The house itself is a charming, sprawling place with a bit of good-natured chaos. Staying there feels like being in someone’s home, and it’s an experience in its own right rather than just a bed for the night. A few things could be better. I couldn’t see tea or coffee facilities in the room, though you can order a drink in the lounge, so there’s no making one privately in your room. I also didn’t spot any fire exit or assembly point signs, and the smoke alarm in my room looked past its sell-by date. The outside signs could be clearer too, unless I simply missed them, as I completely overlooked the main entrance. And the hot tap is on the right? Isn’t that illegal? :) It’s best to arrive without the usual hotel expectations. Think of it more as staying at a friend’s house, and you’ll understand the appeal.

The charming decor and warm hospitality are what make The Garvault so memorable, with its location as the main attraction. Dinner there is well worth considering. It was a wonderful stay, unlike anywhere else, and we’d love to come back.

We weren’t staying overnight. We were driving through the Highlands, spotted the Garvault Hotel, and stopped for lunch. It turned out to be a fantastic find, with warm hospitality and food that made the visit feel welcoming. You can tell the place is a labour of love. What I like is the owners’ history and the character of the hotel. It feels authentic, full of stories, and unlike the sort of place you come across every day. Being off grid adds to the appeal, with a simplicity and sustainability that set it apart from conventional hotels. The setting is remote and peaceful, with striking scenery all around. It lives up to its reputation as Britain’s loneliest hotel, and that distance from everything is part of its charm. It’s special to be surrounded by nature and quiet. If you’re exploring the area and want something genuinely different, it’s well worth a visit.

We only had one night, but it was a fabulous stay. Eva and Adrian, along with their staff, did everything they could to make us feel welcome and give us a memorable visit. We were offered tea and cake when we arrived, then enjoyed a lovely evening meal and a delicious breakfast. The scenery around the house is breathtaking, and it’s so peaceful there. A very special place. Hopefully we’ll be back sometime, and we’ll definitely recommend it to friends and family.
