The house makes a great first impression when you walk in, and we'd stayed there before, but the problems with the owner and the place made this visit really unpleasant. The kitchen is poorly equipped, and some cupboards are locked with the owner's belongings, which cuts down on the space available. It was winter, yet the house was far too hot. We were told not to touch the heating controls at all, so eventually we switched off some radiators just to sleep. The owner lives directly opposite, and we felt watched. One day, all 14 of us came in with the dogs and muddy boots. The front door was open for only a few minutes while people were coming and going, and we got a snippy text saying we were letting heat out unnecessarily. One of the dogs got mud on a bedsheet after jumping on the bed. We wiped some of it off, but couldn't wash it without a spare sheet. After checkout, there was a big fuss and a threat to take money from the security deposit. It seemed like a bit of laundry soap and a wash would have sorted it. We'd paid several thousand pounds for the weekend and had cleaned the whole house from top to bottom before leaving, so that reaction felt like too much.

The main drawback for us was that the lounge spaces couldn't really fit everyone together in one room. There are two smallish lounges, though the dining room is large. The house itself is very big, with spacious, comfortable bedrooms and a roomy kitchen that's looking a little tired. There's also a large conservatory, but it isn't heated. Down in the cellar, the games room has a pool table, pinball machine and table football.

Our wedding at Groomes a couple of weeks ago was a wonderful day. Pete and Ed made the whole planning process enjoyable instead of stressful, and were happy to help with everything we asked for. Nothing seemed like a bother to them. The house and grounds are gorgeous, and we'd happily recommend Groomes for a wedding or a holiday. Thank you both for making the day so lovely. Matt and Jess

Our guests couldn't stop saying how beautiful Groomes was and how much fun the wedding had been. We stayed for two nights with some of the bridal party, and the venue was just what we wanted, tucked away in lovely countryside. Pete, Ed and the team were so helpful before and during the day. Pete was up for all our wild ideas and added suggestions we hadn't even thought of, making sure everything came together perfectly. They couldn't do enough for us. We're thrilled, and so grateful for the best day ever 😊

We stayed here for a friend's wedding in May. It was a lovely place for a wedding, and our room was beautiful. Breakfast was delicious too. Pete, Jane and their family took such good care of everyone. We even came home with a beautiful puppy 🐶
