Ashgrove B&B

The adjoining cottage we were put in was filthy and full of work tools, as if it was being renovated. We had booked five weeks earlier and got the last room at Bed & Bedfast. When we arrived, they said breakfast wasn't available because of dining room capacity and social distancing. We had to leave for the day, so dealt with it the next morning. When we asked about the breakfast we'd paid for, they said the room move, which felt more like a downgrade, made up for it. No refund was offered. Avoid this place. It needs refurbishment and better management.

This felt like a two-star B&B, and major renovations are needed. The rooms and fixtures are dated, there's a slight musty smell, and the bed and pillows weren't comfortable. There was no fresh hand soap either. We paid for breakfast, but the owner persuaded us not to have it in the mornings because of the number of people. The portions are small, and you can get much better breakfasts elsewhere. I know what to expect in kirkcaldy.

After six hours on the train, I arrived at 10pm and found my room badly water damaged and smelling strongly of damp. The owner told me I wouldn't find anywhere else at that hour, which made it seem like this had been his plan all along. Had I been told beforehand that the room had flooded, I would never have agreed to stay. When I asked for my money back, he became abusive. A shocking experience. Avoid. The breakfast was OK, but we won't stay here again. Our room was so cramped that one of us had to sit on the bed whenever the other needed to get to the bathroom. My husband wouldn't use the shower because it was so dirty. If you book, check whether your room has its own toilet. Some don't, and you have to use one down the hall, which we weren't told when booking.
