We were eager to leave. The room smelled awful and had neither heating nor hot water. At check-in, a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up and slippers eventually greeted us at the door. We also had to write our contact details on a sheet of paper that already had someone else’s details above ours.

No breakfast here, just a very basic hotel room, but I slept well because the bed was comfortable. My room was clean enough, especially the bedding, and there was plenty of tea and coffee. The shower and sink had plenty of hot water once I let it run for a few minutes. I’d use it again, though I wouldn’t bring my wife. It’s a working man’s hotel.

The person who checked us in was very friendly, and the B&B is just down the road from the John Charles Centre. But the stairs are steep and very dark, so they aren’t suitable for anyone with mobility issues. They also no longer serve breakfast, despite the B&B sign outside still advertising it. Apparently it stopped two years ago, which seems like enough time to update the sign and website. When I asked about parking, I was told the car park had room for five cars on a first-come, first-served basis. On arrival, we were told it was full with four cars, so we had to leave ours on the road overnight.

The caretaker was friendly and the room was clean. There was no breakfast, but there’s a good cafe up the road on Barkley Parade. The Grove Cafe did an amazing breakfast, and I highly recommend it.

I never made it to the room because the place felt unsafe. The steps were steep, there were no handrails, and the lighting was poor, making it difficult, if not impossible, for a disabled person. They call themselves a bed and breakfast but don’t serve breakfast. I’d rather go camping.
