The Pyewipe Inn

We went there for my birthday today, and both the food and service were brilliant. There’s a good choice of meals. It’s right by the riverside, with outdoor seating. It was busy both inside and out, but service was quick and the food came piping hot.

The roast beef was nice, and I enjoyed the Eaton mess, but the vegetables and roast potatoes had little taste or texture. My wife ordered roast chicken and asked for cranberry sauce, but they didn’t have any, which was a pity. I also felt rushed to order, and the food arrived so quickly it seemed like it had been prepared on a conveyor and sent straight out. We had Sunday lunch at the Pyewipe Inn on Sunday 19 Apr 26. We’d been there quite a few times before and enjoyed both our visits and meals. This time, the new restaurant style disappointed us. It felt cramped with lots of diners, and it was very loud. I went into the area where the previous restaurant had been, but couldn’t make sense of it. There were large statue-like birds, perhaps Oriental, though I don’t know. All in all, we were very disappointed and didn’t have a good experience.

We stopped for a drink at lunchtime, then came back for an evening meal. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time. It was quiet inside, while the terrace was really busy. We drove past it once, so a new, more prominent sign might help.

We’ve been here three or four times now, and New Year’s Day lunch was a great way to spend the day. The food seems to have improved, possibly with a new chef. It wasn’t bad before, but the presentation feels more upmarket now. There’s a good selection of unusual dishes. I started with scallops in celiac sauce, which isn’t something you usually see in a restaurant. It may be a pub, but food is clearly a big focus. Very, very good. I forgot to take photos. It’s right next to a canal, which is a nice location. New Year’s Day can be cold and wet, though, so wrap up for a walk along the canal towards Lincoln. You could probably walk to the cathedral and castle too, but be ready for a trek up aptly named Steep Hill.
