The staff were friendly and polite, which was probably the best part of our stay. The pool wasn’t clean, and the ceiling above it was falling down. There were children in the hot tub despite the sign saying under-18s weren’t allowed. My wife and I stayed one night for my birthday. For the price, I wouldn’t go back. The rooms were nothing special and very outdated. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Breakfast was a letdown too, though the coffee and orange juice were nice. The pastries were overcooked and seemed industrial, the sausages weren’t great quality, and the scrambled eggs were inedible. I requested welcome points and breakfast the next morning, since there was no lounge for my Guaranteed Lounge Access benefit. The hotel said breakfast could be the welcome gift, with a $10 (£7.53) food and drink credit instead of the lounge benefit. As a Marriott Titanium Elite Bonvoy member, I felt the benefits were interpreted very liberally. The hotel had upgraded me to room 339, which faced part of the race track, though the view included upturned plastic chairs and tables and two food shacks. The upgrade meant two double beds instead of the one king I’d booked, taking up much of the floor space. The balcony was only about a metre wide and separated from the other bedrooms by a glass screen, so it wasn’t much use. Both beds were ridiculously bouncy and badly compressed at the foot end, where people would sit to get dressed. I stayed at the Lingfield Park Marriott Hotel on 12-13 March, and was disappointed, somewhere between two and three stars, so I’ve given three. The website says it opened in 2010, but it felt as if very little had been spent on it since. The lifts were slow, and in one, the floor display had dropped out of line with its window. Corridor carpets were old and stained, wallpaper was peeling around several access panels, and the bedroom carpet was ancient with dubious chewing-gum-like stains. The furniture also looked ancient. The bathroom was tiny, well under two metres by two metres, and had 1990s decor. Plastic corner protectors were fitted inside and outside the rooms. They’d been tightened so much that they bowed outward and held dirt and dust. When I’m next in the UK to see my folks, I wouldn’t stay here again.

The staff were fantastic, really polite and friendly, and breakfast was nice, hot, with lots to choose from. We only stayed one night. The place is very run down and needs a lot of work throughout. For the money, I’d expect it to be tip-top, so unfortunately we won’t be back.

We’ve been coming here for years, but no more. The room had cobwebs, which isn’t what I expected for £175. When I raised it with the duty manager, he said the maid was new, but didn’t apologize. The food wasn’t up to scratch either, and riff raff who were very drunk shouted profanities at my partner and me, spoiling my evening meal. My company won’t have any further association with this hotel. For that price, it was very overpriced. I’d expect this kind of service and clientele at the premier inn.

The gym was very clean and tidy, and breakfast was good, with a warm welcome, hot food and a good selection. There were plenty of trained staff at breakfast. We’ve been Lingfield racecourse members for the past few years and have stayed at the Marriott on the course before. The location and rooms are good, but staffing elsewhere wasn’t so good. The people serving were good, just too few of them. An hour and a half after the races, we waited over 25 minutes for a drink at the bar. When we went in for dinner, there were only two servers, and they were run off their feet. The rooms aren’t cheap, and it’s not fair on guests or staff to have so few people serving. Disappointing from Marriott.
