Bankton House Hotel

It’s often nice and quiet here, which I really like, and the atmosphere is great. The food is very good quality too. This is a real hidden gem in Livingston, run by a family across four generations. The ladies are lovely, and it’s usually the owners serving. I love bringing friends and family here. 10/10, I recommend it.

My friend had travelled all the way from London for the deluxe room because he wanted to enjoy a nice, cosy stay, and he paid for it. But when he arrived, they gave him a room half the size. Honestly, it wasn’t a room worth travelling a whole day for. After the long journey he just wanted to sleep, so he didn’t say anything when they gave him the lesser room. It’s really disheartening to see places take advantage of people with disabilities like this. A real shame.

The lack of support made it difficult to sort anything out, as there’s effectively no proper reception. On arrival, we were also asked for a security deposit that hadn’t been clearly disclosed when booking, which added stress after a long day of travel. I have an allergy to feathers, and discovered the bedding was feather-filled. When I politely asked if there was a non-feather option, the answer felt dismissive and condescending. I was told they don’t specify this and it was implied I should have mentioned it in advance. I know smaller lodges have limitations, but guests should still get clear communication, basic hospitality, and respectful treatment. The stay was stressful and poorly managed, and it felt far less welcoming than advertised. I rarely leave a negative review, but this was one of my most frustrating accommodation experiences. I wouldn’t stay here again.

There was a nice selection of food for the funeral reception, and the atmosphere was really cosy with good lighting. I was surprised by the quality of the loose-leaf green tea. I’d highly rate it.
