The service and atmosphere were fine, but the Sunday before Christmas roast turkey was so tasteless I couldn’t finish it. The plate looked good, yet the whole meal seemed reheated from the day before. The roast potatoes were rubbery and the Yorkshire pudding overcooked. There were four of us, and the portions were ridiculously large. Parking was very tight in the tiny car park, and the toilets didn’t look or smell clean. I won’t be eating here again anytime soon.

Our first meal as a party of five on Monday was really enjoyable. Everything was tasty, filling and faultless, as the photos show. But when we came back three days later, on 27th March, the experience was completely different. Three meals were spot on, but the two specials we ordered, pulled turkey with potato rings and cranberry sauce in a beetroot bun, never arrived as described on the menu. Instead, we got a standard bun with no pulled turkey, two thin breaded burgers, no cranberry, and bacon, cheese and onion rings. I checked the menu at the bar in case we’d misunderstood, but what we received didn’t match. The waitress took the menu into the kitchen after I told her. She came back asking if we wanted the meals changed. Of course we did, since those two plates weren’t what we had ordered. The replacements still had no pulled turkey or potato rings, only onion rings. If ingredients weren’t available, they could have told us and offered an alternative. It wasn’t acceptable to serve something else without explanation and expect us to take it. I don’t know if there was a different chef, confusion about the printed menu, or a failure to tell the waitress that ingredients were missing, but it needs sorting out. At the end, I pointed out the onion rings instead of potato rings, and the waitress found it funny. She didn’t apologise. I personally wouldn’t have paid full price, since our group couldn’t eat together and two unacceptable meals had to go back. Those two meals were wrong repeatedly. An elderly relative was treating us and didn’t want a fuss, though. It was a really bad experience, and I wish I’d taken photos of that second meal.

We stayed for around three weeks and had two different rooms, both of them good. The beds were comfortable and the rooms kept clean. Room 3 also has a nice big walk in shower. The staff were helpful and great, and even found us a table when we hadn’t booked. Still, booking ahead is recommended, especially for people who aren’t staying there. There’s a lot of good food here. Breakfast is self serve for cereal, toast and drinks, with cooked options made to order, from poached egg on toast to a full English. We tried several bar meals during the stay and would recommend them, though the portions are very big. The Sunday roast was fantastic, and even the small one was ample. The steak pie was fabulous too, as were the fish and chips. We’d definitely stay again.

We had three dogs with us, and they were easily accommodated. Our table was tucked away in a corner, which suited us perfectly. The staff were all friendly and the service was excellent. The food came quickly, was superb, and the portions were big. We were so full that we took dessert to go, though we didn’t want to miss out. We’d definitely return when we’re next in the area. Highly recommend this gastro pub.

The setting was beautiful and the warm, inviting atmosphere made the visit memorable. Staff welcomed us as soon as we arrived and were friendly and attentive throughout. My roast dinner was generously portioned, full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend for great food and service in a lovely setting.
