The host's humour, banter and little quirks are such fun, and she's outstanding. This is a wonderful pub with traditional pub food. I recommend the Sunday roasts, while my husband always goes for the pie.

Anne and her staff are fantastic. I was here by myself for one night while looking at property in the area, and found it perfectly placed: quiet enough just outside town, but still really convenient. My room was bright, clean and beautiful, with a comfy bed. I had a glorious hot soak in the bath before a hearty meal. The inn isn't particularly modern, but it was spotless and welcoming. Out front there's a lovely place to sit with a drink and look across the hills. I loved the homemade Steak and Ale Pie with its hot water crust pastry, and it came with a good-sized jug of gravy. The puddings sounded mouthwatering, but I couldn't fit one in, so I'll have to come back. Breakfast was great too, especially the homemade marmalade. Thank you.

I was in a hurry and had already waited a long while for my meal, so I only mentioned the food when the plate was being cleared. The fish was acceptable, but the chips were crisp and burnt outside while still uncooked inside. They asked whether anyone had checked if everything was all right. Nobody had. I won't eat there again.

We had a lovely evening meal, and the pie and mash is well worth recommending. The Guinness was a bonus, and the views were great. We stayed in the car park in our camper.

Anne, the landlady, was the highlight. She couldn't have done more for us, and seemed just as welcoming with everyone else. Her home-cooked food was amazing, fresh and served in hearty portions, with plenty to choose from. We had tea there, then breakfast, which was lovely, fresh and had lots of options. I wish we'd tried the pie that so many people recommend! We'd booked an aqueduct canoe excursion and stayed here for a night. It's a little out of town, but only a ten minute drive away. The place is spotless and clearly well cared for, with genuine old-world character. There was a big, comfy bed, friendly and welcoming staff, a large car park and a pleasant outdoor area with spectacular views on a dry day. I'd definitely come back.
