I paid over £200 up front for two nights after booking directly with John in April. I’d been worried I might have to cancel at short notice because my Mum, who has terminal cancer, had been in and out of hospital. Then she had to go back in, and I had less than 48 hours’ notice. I left messages as soon as I could manage a call from the hospital, but John and his staff never picked up despite my dozen or so attempts. I emailed, and he replied days later, refusing to discuss any compromise or refund. I asked about moving the booking to one of the next few weekends, but was told he was booked until July. I asked if he could return even a small part of the money, or offer something else, like a meal if we stayed nearby. He said no to all of it. A quick look at booking sites showed plenty of availability well before July. £200 is a lot for me. I work part time so I can care for my Mum, and the trip was meant to be a visit to my best friend, who’s also ill, not a holiday. After years working in business travel and dealing with bookings at top hotels and last minute Air B&B stays, I’ve never met anyone so heartless. I’d steer clear of him and his hotel. It’s the sort of place that might even charge you extra if you found a hair in the soup they cooked.

It was very comfortable, with a great food selection, and everything was very clean. The hosts were fabulous too. Not sure we could have found anywhere better.
