The staff were genuinely charming and clearly focused on making guests happy, and the team was great. I also liked the character of the reception and lounge, with old books, a fireplace and leather sofas. Even so, I didn't particularly enjoy my stay, though I know some of that is subjective. The hotel is on the building's top floor, reached by narrow corridors with low ceilings. If you're claustrophobic, that could be difficult, though the ship's-cabin feel might appeal to some. Our room was small, dark and somewhat worn, and the view wasn't appealing. The bathroom felt like a corridor, with nowhere to put things and just one outlet, intended for razors. Breakfast felt expensive for what it offered. The made-to-order section quoted a 25 to 30 minute wait, which is excessive. Despite the good staff, I came away with a poor impression of the stay.

The personalised service was on another level. We've stayed at the ritz, the savoy, the langham and the goring, but this place gave us that little extra. It's a small hotel with just 28 rooms, attached at the side of Ruben’s, a carnation hotel, and our stay was exceptional. I was there with my dear mother in room 4104. The electric ceiling was a brilliant feature: press the button and it opened to the sky. The hers and hers setup in our room was a lovely touch. They also arranged concierge parking for the car, and gave us a snack bag for the journey home. The staff really went above and beyond. This is London at its best, stylish, classy and very British.

I've already booked another stay for a couple of weeks from now. I travel a lot for business and have stayed in all sorts of hotels. In my experience, paying for 5 stars often means disappointing service, even when the decor is nice. This place was different from the moment I arrived, when I was greeted by a champagne cart. The staff were warm and funny, asked questions to get to know me, and even left a kind note wishing me well at the event we were hosting a few doors down. The welcome and attention to detail made the whole stay feel special, almost like being treated like royalty at a boutique hotel. The parent hotel is also 100 Princess St in Edinburgh, which is stunning too.

We felt so well looked after during our stay, and the genuine care and attention to detail were far beyond what we'd expected. You made Sharon’s 50th birthday celebration unforgettable.
