For my grandmother's 80th birthday, we had afternoon tea at the Barn. The food selection was delicious, and we had a lovely little area to ourselves in the beautiful hotel. Our first waiter was nice, but the second waitress, who brought the food, was quite rude and seemed unhappy to be there. We had to keep asking for tea since no one checked on us. I've had afternoon tea in other places where they topped it up regularly without us asking. When it was time to pay separately, the man spoke to us in a hostile tone, as if it was a real inconvenience. It's a shame, as everything else at the hotel was lovely. We left disappointed with the service after what was meant to be a special day, and it has put me off visiting again.

The staff were kind and helpful, and the hotel is easy to reach by public transport. There's a good choice of places to eat nearby too. The grounds are fabulous, with lots of parking, and the area is quiet. The rooms feel dated and badly need updating. We didn't mind having to request linen and other room services, but the bins should be emptied every day. Even so, I'd consider staying again.

We spent a lovely weekend with eight friends in the 1528 Cottage, and it was very clean with comfortable beds. The inside has been refurbished, though the outside could use some restoration. We could hear conversations and every footstep from guests above us. We were also surprised that the bar closed early: at 9.30pm, and coffee wasn't available after 9pm. It would've been nice to get a hot drink after being out. Probably wouldn't go back.

I had a reservation mix-up, but the receptionist fixed it straight away without any fuss. The staff I've met have all been a real credit to the hotel. My room was comfortable, very clean and smelled fresh when I walked in. It was a little dated, though the bathroom was modern. I stayed long enough to try most of the food, and it was all exceptionally good. A good experience all round and well worth the price.

The food at the afternoon tea was plentiful and delicious, and the hotel itself is beautiful, but the service really let down our grandmother's 80th birthday celebration. One young woman was abrupt and told us to “move our stuff” so she could put the platters down, without a please or thank you. No one checked on us, so we had to find a server whenever we wanted more tea or drinks. At £25 a head, I'd expect attentive service. A £21 service charge was added, and while I'd normally be happy to tip for good service, this wasn't that. When we went to pay separately, the man at the counter made the atmosphere hostile and left us feeling unwelcome and like an inconvenience. The afternoon had been planned so nicely, but this put a dampener on the day. The staff need retraining in customer service.
