The chips were excellent, and the rest of the meal was tasty and cooked well enough. Still, the place felt unsure about what sort of pub it wanted to be. There was a cosy pub area at the front and a dining room at the back, but the dining room had large football screens and a really poor duo performing. We wondered why the TVs and the “band” weren’t in the pub section. We’d driven a long way and found the place at the last minute. The decor was nice, but the entertainment made us think we’d walked into karaoke. It was two people singing badly. We only had to sit through a couple of songs while waiting for food, then they took a break, so we ate quickly and paid before they returned. I had the butterfly chicken with camembert, caramelised onion, salad and chips. There was far too much onion on the chicken, and the salad was a jumble of spinach and lettuce, cherry and sundried tomatoes, olives and gherkins. My friend had the Turkish flatbread and said it had too much chilli jam and tsatsiki. It looks like it may once have been more of a gastro pub, and now someone’s trying to cover every kind of pub.

The day was fabulous from beginning to end, and the staff were a big part of making it so memorable. Everyone at the Stag helped us plan our fake wedding. I’m sure we stressed you out, but we had a blast. The food was great, everything was timed well, and the staff were lovely. Breakfast was lovely too. Thanks so much.

The Sunday lunch itself was excellent, with generous portions, great value and really tasty food. Homemade Yorkshire puddings were a perfect touch. We were seated by the back door, where a wedding group was leaving and people kept passing to the garden, so it was opening constantly. We asked to move, but were told the place was fully booked despite plenty of empty tables. The staff didn’t seem interested in finding a solution. At the end, there was no apology or offer to make it right, just a shrug. The atmosphere has lost some charm. Big TVs, casual uniforms and background music don’t quite suit the country-style decor. The food’s still great, though.

The fish and chips were a real treat, both had lovely crisp skin, and the chicken burger, steak and calamari were good too. Mash and sausages fell a little short, while the desserts were just as delicious as the best dishes. Nice relaxed feel, and I loved the edible little pot for the chocolate sauce. It tasted of caramel.

The soup was amazing, but the other dishes let things down. My steak was well done even though I’d asked for medium, and the fries were overcooked. The lasagne was burnt around the edges. The kids’ bolognese came with tomato sauce, with no bolognese at all.
