There was a bug in the room, and the bathroom cabinet and bin hadn't been cleaned. The double bed was tiny for two people. My partner was woken by loud guests at 1am, then I was woken at 7am by staff in the store cupboard next to our room. After we left, I realised I'd left my spare phone on top of the wardrobe. I called the hotel, but they said nothing had been handed in and that staff "always clean the top of the wardrobes." That doesn't seem right, since it was covered in dust when I left the phone there 🤣

The location is great for Canal Street, which is the main thing this place has going for it. My partner had stayed before and thought it was noticeably better then. Now it feels as if a change of management or chain has let standards slip. We won't return unless there's a significant improvement. We were told at reception that our small double room was the quietest available. From about 3am, though, glass bottles were being emptied loudly into bins right outside the window. We could also hear other guests talking in their rooms and doors slamming. The sound insulation is very poor, and the bed felt cramped. We were also uneasy about the luggage storage, with bags left essentially out in the open and no clear safeguards. That could mean a real risk of loss or theft, especially for anyone carrying medical equipment or other essential items. After checkout, my partner realised he'd left his eye mask behind. The hotel said they'd check, then called within 10 minutes to say it definitely wasn't in the room. So either housekeeping had already removed it, or someone wasn't being fully honest. Either way, it didn't sit right.

The staff were friendly and helpful, replacing the towels and apologising for the inconvenience. That was the only good part of the stay. The towels had a brownish tint and looked unhygienic. There was glitter all over the bed, the mattress was in poor condition, and the blue cushions were stained and disgusting. The heater, window and fan were extremely dirty too. The room was unbearably hot, but opening the window made the street noise worse. You could hear everything, so getting to sleep was impossible either way. Even at £10 a night, this place isn't worth it. It left a terrible aftertaste and was easily the worst hotel I've stayed in.

It only costs £1 to use the facilities, but Rachel makes the experience feel pleasant and professional. She keeps everything clean and well looked after, and she's always polite, approachable, welcoming and helpful. She's a credit to the Village Hotel.

The location is good, and the bathroom was clean and new, though the rest of the room wasn't clean enough. For that price, I suppose that's about what you get. I hadn't realised the hotel was in the gay neighbourhood! 😮
