The George Heart House

The rooms are small and cosy, but all the thoughtful little touches make them special: bath slats, a smelling stone, robes and more. The pub’s hotel bar was stocked with lovely, very sustainable goods. Even with a room that has an external shower and loo, the facilities are so nice it doesn’t make a difference. Such a lovely pub, and I was rarely this happy with a stay.

I was renovating a flat and too tired to cook, so I came in alone for a quick dinner. I wound up booking a room upstairs because I couldn’t face another night with dust, dirt and no shower. The meal was very good, and the pub felt cosy and comfortable. Upstairs was wonderful too, with quirky art and personal touches in the room and shared guest areas. The shared bathroom has an excellent shower, and the morning coffee was good. I highly recommend it for a night in Margate.

The room design was lovely, and I liked how many features of the listed building had been kept. There’s a cute self-serve nook, too. The local crowd gives the hotel a really good atmosphere, and the location is lovely. Drinks were okay for taste and selection, but good value. The bed felt a little hard to me, though that’s a small thing in an otherwise great stay.

We stopped for a Sunday afternoon drink and found a table in the beer garden. A staff member came over very rudely to ask if we were okay, apparently because we were meant to wait to be seated. That was our mistake. When I asked if she was okay, she scoffed and mumbled, then walked off while we tried to apologise. Wonderful experience.
