For the price and location, we had no complaints. We were visiting Edinburgh for three days, and the nearby station at Tweedbank was about six minutes away. The place felt warm and welcoming, and the staff were down to earth and friendly. Our room was clean, cozy and had everything we needed. It’s not an average modern hotel, and we actually liked its old charm. Some people seem to have certain expectations of hotels, but we enjoyed that it was something different. We had breakfast on our second morning, and at £7,50 it was good value. It’s not a five star place, so don’t expect that and give it some slack. The window was a bit unstable, there weren’t many plug sockets, and the light above the bathroom mirror didn’t work. That’s about all I can fault.

As a pub, this place is better than most in The Borders, though I can’t vouch for the rooms, which I think affect the rating. It’s a little rough round the edges, but locally it’s the only place with anything close to a decent cask selection. There’s a nice sheltered area out back for sunny days.

The staff were fabulous, and the food was deliciously delicious. Our room was a good size, clean and comfortable. A great stopover.

The steak pie was really good, and the apple crumble rounded off the meal nicely. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful, and the service was brilliant. I’d highly recommend a visit, whether you’re coming for a meal or staying at the hotel.

The staff were pleasant and helpful, and I really enjoyed the breakfasts. I stayed at the George and Abottsford Hotel for two nights at the end of September. Its location in the centre of Melrose was perfect for me, and my room was clean and comfortable.
